How to find the cheapest petrol near you
The lowest price is often only a few minutes away, but it is easy to miss when fuel prices change throughout the day. Here is a simple way to compare petrol stations before you set off.

1. Compare price and distance together
A station that is 2p per litre cheaper may not save money if it adds a long detour. Check both the displayed price and the route distance. For a typical 50-litre fill, 2p per litre is £1, so a short detour is usually the better choice.
2. Check the fuel grade
Compare like with like: standard unleaded, premium petrol and diesel are different products. Most everyday petrol cars use E10, while some cars need E5 or premium fuel. Filter by fuel type and brand so you are comparing the right product.
3. Compare the cost of your fill
Pence per litre is useful, but the best station for you depends on tank size and how much fuel you need. A fill-cost estimate for a quarter, half, three-quarter or full tank makes the comparison more realistic than looking at the headline price alone.
4. Check prices before leaving
Retailer prices can change, and a station may be busy or temporarily out of a fuel grade. Check the latest available price and any recent reports about queues or supply before making a detour.
Which UK fuel stations are included?
The comparison covers major retailers such as Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, BP, Shell and Esso, along with many independent stations participating in the CMA scheme. Coverage changes as retailers join and submit data.
